Travel photo: Vieste historical lighthouse

Vieste Lighthouse Photo

Vieste is a town of about 13k inhabitants in the Southern Italian region of Puglia. It’s located on the eastern tip of the Gargano Promontory.

This is the area where I’m working at the moment, and even if the place I am is called Pugnochiuso, Vieste is the nearest populated area – about 18 km away: quite a drive, if you consider the road is pretty twisting!

Vieste historical lighthouse was built on the Saint Eufemia rock, in front of Vieste’s harbor, in 1868, and it’s still active.

You can see its light from 36 miles away: quite powerful! Its position is strategic for the lower Adriatic Sea courses.

I took this photo while leaving the harbor for a beautiful sea caves tour. I choose the black and white as I like the ancient taste it gives to the lighthouse, being it an old building.

The sailor in the foreground is coming back to the harbor with his catch.

I especially like the writing “Vieste” on the lighthouse… as if someone could read it from a distance!

I’ll post a photo essay about the amazing Gargano sea caves soon, so stay tuned!

Sharing is caring! :)

There aren’t enough lighthouses in the world. This is beautiful. What a stunning picture, Giulia. I wouldn’t mind seeing that when going to work. :)
